2022.01.20 19:59 purpleunicorns169 How do I improve a relationship that has turned very awkward?

I have developed a very awkward relationship with my volunteer supervisor because of various miscommunications over time. One time she asked me if I wanted to do something, but I misheard it as if I knew how to do something. My response was no, and her response was silence. Another time, I was in a lot of pain, and abruptly stopped talking in a middle of a conversation.
I didn’t address these problems when they first arose, and now 2 years later, it seems a little late to talk about it. I feel like she feels that I don’t like her and don’t want to help out. I feel like she avoids me. It bothers me that there’s this awkwardness between us. She’s a cool person, but should I even clarify what happened at this point? How do I go about this?

2022.01.20 19:59 throwingup2andaway AITB for offering to take my friend to a food pantry instead of buying her groceries?

My friends been unemployed since November. She owes me $1000 since 2018 and I've bought her groceries the last two times. I told her to find some food pantries and I can take her this weekend so she doesn't waste her gas but she told me she was good even though I bought her groceries like 2 weeks ago. I told her to just let me know when she runs out of food and I'll take her. She basically starved last time until I offered to buy her groceries.
AITB for not just buying her groceries?

2022.01.20 19:59 AccuAaart How `nvram` Deals with Binary Data -- Values of SystemAudioVolume Demystified -- Macintosh Startup Chime

The firmware variable "SystemAudioVolume" deals with the volume of the startup chime (or startup boot sound) of Macintosh. The command nvram can set this variable as well as print the value of this variable. The data type for SystemAudioVolume is binary data. This article explains the values of SystemAudioVolume in detail.
Most Macintosh models built in late 2016 or later are completely incapable of startup chime, and hence SystemAudioVolume is useless on these models. However, I suppose that there are many enough old Macintoshes still in use that this article will help some people.
Furthermore, by studying how nvram deals with SystemAudioVolume, one can learn how nvram deals with binary data in general, which can be applied to other variables. Thus, I hope that this article still has some usefulness.
Prerequisite: Terminal, command line, hexadecimal
The 128 hexadecimal numbers 0 through 7F represent all available volumes of the startup chime, where 0 is the quietest or mute, and 7F is the loudest. To be passed to the nvram command, each of these hexadecimal numbers must take the %-prefixed notation of the form %xx, where x is a case-insensitive hexadecimal digit; e.g. %00, %7F, %7f. (See below to pass ASCII characters.)
Any single-digit hexadecimal number must be accompanied by a leading zero (e.g. %00, %01, %02); otherwise, nvram will reject it and post an error message. In other words, the form %x is not allowed.

# Mute the startup chime sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00 # Turn up the startup chime to the loudest sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%7F # Print the current value of SystemAudioVolume nvram SystemAudioVolume # Print all the firmware variables with their values nvram -p # Print all the firmware variables with their values # (double-spaced) nvram -p | perl -0777pe 's|\n|\n\n|g'
Hexadecimal numbers other than 0 through 7F are useless for SystemAudioVolume, but nevertheless allowed, and will be treated as either 0 or 7F, as explained in the following two paragraphs.
Hexadecimal numbers 80 through FF in the %xx form, i.e. %80 through %FF, will be treated as %00 (the quietest, mute). Note that, in general apart from nvram, for 8-bit signed integers, hexadecimal numbers 80 (-128 dec) through FF (-1 dec) work as negative numbers. However, there are no negative volumes for SystemAudioVolume. Thus, %80 through %FF are treated as %00.
Hexadecimal numbers (or binary data) that are too long to fit in the %xx form must take the forms %xx%xx, %xx%xx%xx, and so on, and will be treated as %7F (the loudest).
Upon nvram printing of the value of a hexadecimal number (or binary data) that is short enough to fit in the %xx form, if the hexadecimal number happens to be the character code of a printable ASCII character, then nvram prints the ASCII character; otherwise, nvram prints the value in the %xx form. (nvram considers a space to be printable and prints a space for %20; but nvram considers a tab not to be printable and prints %09 for a tab.) This rule applies to each individual %xx for longer hexadecimal numbers (or binary data) that take the forms %xx%xx, %xx%xx%xx, and so on.
The default value for SystemAudioVolume is %69, which happens to be the ASCII code for the character 'i'. Thus, if the current value of SystemAudioVolume is %69, then nvram will print 'i' (without quotes) as its value.
# In the following, the output from command # is marked by the prefix '#!'. # Restore the startup chime to the default value %69 sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%69 # Print the current value of SystemAudioVolume nvram SystemAudioVolume #! SystemAudioVolume i
To pass any of the hexadecimal numbers 0 through 7F to nvram, the %xx form is usually taken; however, the ASCII character of which the the hexadecimal number is the ASCII code may also be passed.
# Restore the startup chime to the default value %69, # which happens to be the ASCII code for the character 'i' sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=i
Here are some noteworthy values
%7F # the loudest %69 # the default %00 # the quietest, mute
Note that, depending on the auditory sensitivity of the user, and depending on the Macintosh model, any value below %40 may make the volume so low as to be practically almost the same as mute.
There is one important warning. Beware not to confuse the number 0 with the character '0', and the number 1 with the character '1', and so on. The ASCII code for the character '0' is the hexadecimal number 30. The ASCII code for the character '1' is the hexadecimal number 31.
# If you want to mute the startup chime: # This is NOT what you want sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=0 # The above means: sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%30 # This is what you want sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00 #-------------------- # If you want to turn up # the startup chime to the loudest: # This is NOT the right way (even though it works) sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=10 # The above means: sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%31%30 # Any hexadecimal number (or binary data) which is # too long to fit in the %xx form # and hence which takes one of the forms # %xx%xx, %xx%xx%xx, and so on, # will be treated as %7F (the loudest). # Thus, the above has the same effect as # the following: # This is the right way sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%7F
There is one more thing, which is trivial, but is presented here for the sake of completeness. The treatment of ASCII characters by nvram is slightly different depending on whether printing or setting the variable. Unlike printing, when passing a value to nvram, not only printable ASCII characters but also non-printable ASCII characters may be used. For example, 7F (the loudest) happens to be the ASCII code for the Delete character. You may pass a Delete character to nvram in the place of %7F. However, do you know how to pass a Delete character on command line? You may use $'\x7F', which bash converts to the Delete character before passed to nvram.
# In the following, the output from command # is marked by the prefix '#!'. # Pass a Delete character sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=$'\x7F' # Print the current value of SystemAudioVolume nvram SystemAudioVolume #! SystemAudioVolume %7f
